Panthers Pull Off Win Over Patriots In OTby GamedayMagazine.com January 7, 2012 2:43 AM

POTOMAC FALLS, VA - Potomac Falls and Park View are only 10 minutes, and 5 miles apart. Park View entered the game with a 4-3 record in the district coming off a win over Woodgrove. Potomac Falls was 4-2 coming off a big win over Tuscarora on Wednesday night. The gym at Potomac Falls was packed with many alumni in attendance to celebrate 15 years of Panther basketball. They were honored before the game to a standing ovation.
Starting off the game the Panthers and the Patriots traded baskets, as their two big stars shined throughout the night, Greg Graves for Potomac Falls and Ryan McCarter for Park View. The first quarter ended with the score tied at 17.
Starting off the second quarter, the Patriots went on a 13-6 scoring run led by McCarter to take a 30-23 lead with 4:55 to go in the half. The Panthers hung in there and kept the game close but Park View was willing to knock off the defending state champs. After the Panthers went on a 4-2 run, McCarter responded with a dunk to give the Patriots a 34-27 lead. The half ended with the Patriots up 40-36.
In the second half the Panthers showed why they are the defending state champions. They took a 60-55 lead at the end of the third quarter, setting up a thrilling finish to the game.
After Park View retook the lead, the Panthers answered back on a three by Greg Graves to give the Panthers a 66-65 lead with 5 minutes to go in the game. The Panthers then went on a 5-2 scoring run highlighted by a jumper by Graves and a three by Matt Galloway to make it 71-67 with 3:30 left in the game.
A few minutes later Park View stormed right back to tie it at 73. The Panthers answered right back with a bucket by freshmen Wanya Allen to make it 75-73 with 2:05 left. With 1:07 left, Park View once gain tied it at 75, and Allen gave the Panthers a spark with a huge bucket with 27 seconds to go for a 77-75 lead. However, it would take overtime to decide this game, as Park View tied it with 6 seconds left in the game to force overtime, tied at 77.
The Panthers got off to a quick start in overtime with big buckets from Greg Graves to give them an 87-81 advantage with 1:21 to go. With 41 seconds Park View cut the Panther lead to two with a three by Dante Absher to make it 88-86. After Graves went one for two from the free throw line, the Patriots needed a three to force double overtime but they missed the shot as Potomac Falls held on for a 91-86 win.
Greg Graves led the Panthers with 44 points. Matt Galloway added 23, Wanya Allen had 12, Jordan Ferbrache scored 4, and Dshawn Shorts had 3.
For the Patriots, Ryan McCarter led them with 31 points. Alec Dombkowski added 21, Dante Absher had 15 and Cody Horvath scored 8.
The Panthers will travel to Manassas on Saturday to take on AAA powerhouse Osbourn who had a big win earlier in the week over Broad Run. Tip-off is at 7 pm. This will be a good test for the Panthers and it should be a great game!
