Everything seemed to be in-line for Georgetown Prep star Bobby Gribbin to join his older brother Billy on the lacrosse field next year at Penn State, where the two attack players could join forces to light up opposing Big Ten goalies. But everything hasn't gone as planned since Bobby made his commitment over a year ago during his junior high school season.
The two brothers will be playing together in the future, but in a surprising turn it will be at the University of Maryland and not at Penn State where Billy recently finished his sophomore year. Coaching changes at both schools in the past year have opened the door for Billy to transfer, and Bobby to make a late switch of his commitment.
For both players to make the change, Penn State needed to allow a release, which Georgetown Prep Coach Kevin Giblin confirmed has been taken care of.
"It's a done deal," explained Coach Giblin before Saturday's NCAA Men's Lacrosse semifinal matchup between Maryland and Duke. In a sign of enthusiasm for the late college decision, Bobby wore a bright red Maryland shirt to attend the game.
Billy, who also attended Georgetown Prep in Bethesda, shined as a freshman for Penn State scoring 23 goals, second most on the team. This season, as a sophomore, Billy scored a productive but much less flashy 6 goals, and clearly has the potential for more.
The younger Gribbin, Bobby, completed his high school career earning All-American honors, and is a strong candidate to be picked as an All-Met as well. His game winning goal in the Interstate Athletic Conference (IAC) title game against rival Landon, perfectly exemplified his tremendous talent on the lacrosse field. He has the ability to dodge defenders with ease, but is equally adept at using his strength and balance to power through double and triple teams.
Bobby also possesses a wicked outside shot that has baffled goalies, and is a very strong face-off specialist, a position he could possibly contend for in College Park.
Bobby was a three-sport star while in high school, captaining the football and lacrosse teams, but chose to not wrestle during his senior year. Older brother Billy played the same three sports at Prep and captained all three teams his senior year. Both Gribbin's were highly decorated in each sport.
Here is Bobby Gribbin's (#1) game-winning goal in the IAC final against Landon to give Prep the conference title:
