St. John's and Holy Cross both battled through a tough WCAC schedule.
We are happy to bring you our Potomac Valley Orthopaedic GamedayMD Men's Basketball Power Poll for both public and private schools for 2010-11 basketball season. We will be updating our poll with our staff picks, so check back to see each how team stacks up.
Power Poll 7th Edition - Playoff Edition
(*Previous Poll Rankings in Parenthesis)
Girls:
1. St John's - 24-2 (1)- The Lady Cadets finished up their season with wins in both the WCAC finals and the City Championship.
2. Good Counsel - 24-3 (2)- A tremendous year was completed by the Falcons as runner up in the WCAC tournament.
3. Holy Cross - 22-5 (3)- Eddie Simpson's first year at the helm for the Tartans was a success and we expect them to be right back at the top of the WCAC in 2011-12.
4. Georgetown Visitation - 23-2 (4)- The ISL regular season champs breezed through the conference schedule unscathed, but were upended in the ISL finals by Flint Hill.
5. Gaithersburg - 18-0 (5)- The Trojans have continued their undefeated run into the Maryland State playoffs. Next up is a state semifinal game on Thursday night.
Boy's Private:
1. Montrose Christian - 22-1 (1)- The Mustang's completed an impressive regular season and will wait to compete in the NHSI tournament in early April.
2. DeMatha - 26-7 (2)- Despite a not quite as dominate year as Dematha has gotten used to, the Stag's stilled managed to win the WCAC tournament and City Title games. Sophomore Beejay Anya has continued to develop into one of the top big men in the country. The Alhambra tournament still awaits the Stags.
3. Gonzaga - 24-7 (4)- As expected this young team has played much better in the second half of the season, with four of the five Eagles' leading scorers as sophomores. Gonzaga could get another shot at Dematha, who they barely lost to in the WCAC finals, at the Alhambra tournament.
4. Landon - 19-6 (3)- The Bears' displayed their talent and depth, defeating Bullis easily in the IAC semifinals, but were not quite able to beat a fast rising Episcopal team. Landon has completed their season.
5. Bullis - 15-11 (5)- Bullis could not quite overcome a senior laden Landon team in the IAC semi's, but bounced back quickly to end their season on a high note with a 9 point consultation game victory over St. Albans. Bullis will return three of their starters next year including the entire backcourt.
Boy's Public:
1. Magruder - 22-3 (3)- Magruder is the only remaining boy's team still playing in the state playoffs after knocking off rival Springbrook. They will have a chance to reach the state finals with a win on Thursday night.
2. Springbrook - 22-3 (2)- Springbrook's 3 year run as 4A State Champs has come to an end with a loss to Magruder. The Devil's are the first team to ever win three consecutive years and are expected to bounce back as a favorite again in 2011-12.
3. Sherwood - 13-12 (1)- The Warrior's fought back from adversity early in the year and made a nice run in the playoffs, but were knocked off by Springbrook. Next year could be a bright one for Sherwood with some very nice players coming back.
4. Quince Orchard - 18-7 (5)- QO had only one loss in their division during the regular season, but could not get passed some of the Frederick 3A powers. The Cougar's surprised many this year with a fine performance, even though a bit under the radar.
5. Churchill - 18-6 (4)- After locking up the Montgomery County 4A West regular season title, Churchill fell off a bit, but bounced back with a strong run in the state playoffs. Coach Matt Miller is a favorite for our Coach of the Year honors.
6. Kennedy - 17-8 (8)- Kennedy won 7 out of 9 to end the season and really had no bad losses all season. Marcus Murray led this team on offense, but it was their defense that was key. A tough playoff loss ended the year for arguably the best defensive team in Montgomery County this year.
7. Gaithersburg - 15-9 (6)- A late season surge saw the Trojans jump way up in our power poll. The unselfish play of Malcolm Miller and the tremendous second half of the year for Kris Westphall were fun to watch before their playoff exit and conclusion to the season.
8. Wootton - 14-9 (7)- The Patriots dropped a heartbreaker to Sherwood in the playoffs, but that doesn't discount all that was accomplished by this hardnosed group. The Patriot's will have to regroup after losing a strong senior class.
9. Paint Branch - 13-11 (9)- Paint Branch was the most difficult team to figure out in Montgomery County from week to week. The Panthers followed thrilling wins over the likes of Magruder, with head scratching losses, but all in all we saw a successful year concluded in the playoffs.
10. Blake - 14-9 (NR)- Our tenth spot in the poll was a heated debate with teams like Wheaton certainly deserving consideration. In the end, it was the dynamic combination of leading scorers Brandon Hedley and Matt McGugan that gave Blake the nod into our final poll spot.
